Egress window: Ontario regulations
Making sure your egress window, or really any part of your home, is up to code can be a bit of a daunting task. But don't worry, we’re here to make it easy for you. Understanding these rules is key to keeping your home safe and compliant, and we've got your back every step of the way.
Regulations
The window must be openable from the inside without the use of tools or special knowledge.
It must provide an unobstructed opening with a minimum area of 0.35 sq. m. (3.77 sq. ft.) with no dimension less than 380 mm (1’3”).
There must be a 550 mm (1’ 10 2/3”) space of clearing in front of the window.
Where a window sash swings towards a window well, it must not do so in a way that would restrict escape in an emergency.
These regulations are put in place for the safety of anyone occupying a residential home. In case of emergency there needs to be a way to exit the building, and for a basement, that means an egress window.
Size Requirements
An Egress window must meet a minimum size requirement to allow for safe and easy passage in and out of the building. In Ontario, the minimum height is 24 inches, while the minimum width is 20 inches. Additionally, the window must have a minimum total area of 3.77 square feet to provide adequate space for evacuation.
